Microsoft has made its latest attempt to become relevant in the new world of mobile devices, releasing a version of its Office software for Apple’s iPad tablet.

Word raced to the top of Apple’s free apps chart hours after becoming available in the App Store, with OneNote standing in fourth position.

The move represents a major change in strategy for the company, which after years of resistance has decided to bring its suite of productivity applications that are familiar to millions of workers to the bestselling touchscreen device built by its arch rival.
