PC buyers stick to what they know: Intel

Intel has revealed that the vast majority of PC buyers stick with what they know.

Global director of consumer channel's group, Jeff McCrea, spoke to CRN while visiting Sydney this week. He said that recent research conducted by Intel showed that 89 percent of customers were replacing a notebook with another notebook, while three-quarters of desktop users were upgrading to a new desktop.

"A lot of people assumed that the growth in the tablet market was at the expense [of PCs], people replacing their old notebooks with tablets. What we are seeing is that in every case, the vast majority are replacing them with a similar device.

"Does that mean they will delay a purchase? Maybe, but the point is that we are seeing people replace with what they have. The form factor they had has utility and is delivering on what they need."

McCrea said Australians could expect a boost in product launches in the second half, singling out all-in-ones and hybrids as two exciting categories.

Within hybrids, he said this applies to both detachables, where the keyboard can be removed, and convertibles, where the screen remains attached.

"The ASUS T100 is a great example of the detachable model and the Lenovo Yogas are one of the best examples of the convertible," said McCrea.

He added that buyers who wanted a tablet would lean toward detachables, while notebook users were more inclined to purchase convertibles.
