yantouch Diamond+ "Music + Light" Bluetooth Speaker Hardware Review

When turned off in a well-lit room, the yantouch Diamond+ looks kind of like a slightly garish ball of nothing. When turned on in a dark room - especially when displaying colors based on the tempo of the being played through it - it’s more like staring into a technicolored Eye of Sauron. You know, if Sauron were actually a pretty cool guy and not bent on conquering/destroying the world.

Setting up the Diamond+ is pretty easy, and there are a couple of options you can pick from. Initially I hooked it up to my computer via the included audio cable, then later via bluetooth. I’m not sure if it’s just my imagination but it actually sounded a little tinny when connected via the cable, but it sounds just fine via bluetooth.

The colors are really what it’s all about, though. When the Diamond+ is turned on, it produces some very vibrant (and sparkly!) shades of color. It can transition between them with the push of a button or shift through them automatically regardless of the accompaniment of any music. The music certainly helps, though. Depending on the tempo mode selected, it can create quite the impressive visual display. You can of course opt to turn off the pyrotechnics if you’d rather simply use the Diamond+ as a regular old speaker, but where’s the fun in that?

It’s also possible to unplug the Diamond+ and use it on the go, with a battery that’s said to last for up to seven hours on a full charge. So in addition to being a pretty good speaker and a laser light show, it can also go cordless. Plus there’s a companion app available that allows you to use it as a sort of sleep aid/simulated sunrise alarm. Not a bad range of options, really.

Really though, the amount of use and enjoyment you can get out of using the yantouch Diamond+ depends on those lights and colors. As a standalone speaker it’s pretty good, but it’s not the be-all and end-all. However, if you like the idea of being able to bath a small room in colorful, rhythmic light - or if you like the idea of waking up to an artificial sunrise - it’s definitely worth a look.
