Apple increases Flyover city tour support ahead of iOS 8's public launch

September 7, 2014

Apple’s Flyover city tours, which allow Maps app users to take a whistle-stop tour of a location’s most popular districts and buildings, are now available in some 40 supported cities, parks, and landmarks, according to a recent report.

The news comes from MacRumors, which explains that Apple has been expanding on the feature’s support ahead of the public release of iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. So far, Flyover itself is available in 90 locations across the world; Flyover city tours, however, can now be accessed for 40 of these locations (outlined below).

As you can see, New York, London, Paris, and Rome, as well as less famous cities across the United States and Europe, are all supported by Flyover tours. In its report, MacRumors explains:

During the beta testing period for iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, Apple has also tweaked the means of identifying locations with Flyover tours enabled, making them easier to find. Initially, cities with the feature available were identifiable only by the text of the city name being in yellow rather than the standard white in Hybrid view. Apple has since tweaked the display to instead identify Flyover tour cities with a small “3D” icon instead of the standard dot used to mark location.

Despite the launch of Flyover city tours, however, “personnel problems” mean many impressive features have reportedly been left out of the iOS 8 Maps application, a report in June explained. Whether more improvements reach the application with iOS 8.1 of course remain to be seen.
