Samsung is known for making some pretty outlandish phablets, including the 7-inch Galaxy W and the 6.3-and-5.8-inch Galaxy Mega. In mid September, the Korean company released the successor to the 5.8-inch Mega, called the Galaxy Mega 2. It’s slightly larger than its predecessor and has better specs, too.

Updated on 10-21-2014 by Andy Boxall: AT&T has snapped up the Galaxy Mega 2, ready for sale on October 24.

Buy the Galaxy Mega 2 from October 24

AT&T has announced it will be selling the Galaxy Mega 2 from October 24. The big-screen phone has been priced at $475 without a contract, but if you don’t mind signing up for two years, it’ll only cost you $150 on the day. Alternatively, there are two AT&T Next options from which to choose. The Next 18 plan is $19.80 per month, while cutting down to Next 12 means you’ll pay $23.75 per month.

Buyers who get their Galaxy Mega 2 before October 31 will qualify for AT&T’s $100 credit offer, which only applies to new Next contracts, and is also available on devices such as the Galaxy Alpha. At the time of writing, AT&T only has a “coming soon” page up for the Galaxy Mega 2, but watch out for more details over the next few days.

Big screen, mid-range specs

The Mega 2 is a mid-range phablet that features a a 6-inch screen with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. The device is powered by Samsung’s own 1.5GHz Exynos 4415 quad-core processor along with 1.5GB of RAM. It’s running Android 4.4 KitKat and uses Samsung’s power saving mode to preserve battery life.

The Mega 2 sports an 8-megapixel back camera and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. Samsung packed only 16GB of storage into the phablet, but luckily, it has a microSD card slot for additional storage. In terms of connectivity, the new Mega comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n 2.4+5GHz, Bluetooth 4.0, LTE and a dual-SIM option.

Initially, the Galaxy Mega 2 went on sale in Malaysia and Thailand in late September.
