Why Intel wants to expand its presence in the wearable space

Why Intel's strategy and products help it gain market share (Part 7 of 8)

(Continued from Part 6)

Intel acquired Basis Science

In March 2014, Intel (INTC) completed its purchase of Basis Science. Basis Science specializes in wearable device technologies for health and wellness applications. Through this acquisition, Intel gained an easy access to the wearable devices market.

Recently, Intel launched the Basis Peak smart watch. Intel’s peers—Texas Instruments (TXN) and Qualcomm (QCOM)—have their sensors inside wearable technology devices. Intel doesn’t want to miss the opportunity—like it did with the mobile computing market.

Intel collaborates and develops wearable devices

In 2Q14, at the Opening Ceremony Spring and Summer 2015 fashion show, Intel unveiled its smart “wearable” bracelet. It was developed in collaboration with Opening Ceremony-My Intelligent Communication Accessory (or MICA).

In CES 2014, Intel showcased a smart earbud that can monitor an individual’s heart rate. It also showcased a smart watch that has a geofencing feature. The feature alerts the user if a child or a tracked individual moves outside of a predetermined region. It also unveiled Edison—a SD card-sized computer that can connect everyday objects and appliances to the Internet.

In 2013, Intel made investments in Recon Instruments. It’s a company that makes Heads-up Display (or HUD) for sports and outdoor environments. It also invested in Thalmic Labs—an armband muscle movement sensor manufacturer.

Wearable technology has the potential to create the next mobile revolution

Diginomica expects the wearable device market to be worth $18 billion by 2019. It’s expected to become an integral part of the enterprise mobile strategy over the next five years. According to Gartner, wearable devices will drive 50% of total mobile app interactions. Realizing the huge growth this space has to offer, leading technology players—like Salesforce.com (CRM) and Accenture (ACN)—have entered into this space.
