Apple a victim of its own success?

The latest malware attack on Apple (AAPL) may be a sign of how popular the company has become.

Cyber security firm Palo Alto Networks first reported the attack, which uses infected apps from China to get the malware named "WireLurker" into iPhones, iPads and Mac computers. Apple says it’s blocked those apps from downloading.

Yahoo Finance Senior Columnist Michael Santoli says we shouldn’t be surprised Apple is more of a target these days.

“Malware or viruses or any of these sort of breaches happen when you have a tremendously broad user base,” he points out. “For example, Microsoft (MSFT) was very buggy because everyone used it. As Apple becomes more pervasive, it probably will be subject to more of these invasions because that’s where the bad guys want to go-- in the devices we all have.”

Santoli isn’t sure, but he has an idea why this cyber attack is coming now-- the recent release of the very popular iPhone 6.

“I do think it happens with every rollout. You do have this wave, whether it’s a new operating system or the actual devices, when you do see these kinds of opportunistic invaders come in there.”

And Santoli’s advice to Apple? Get used to this.

“I view it as the typical ‘whack-a-mole’ function that any hardware and software maker has to deal with once they come into a new market, such as China, or with a new set of products,” he says.
