Microsoft Buys a Calendar App in Its Latest Bid for Mobile Relevance

Microsoft has been on a mobile tear lately.

Microsoft just snapped up another app that works beyond the Microsoft universe.

Today, in a blog post and a video posted to YouTube, the software giant confirmed its acquisition of calendar app maker Sunrise. The deal was first revealed last week, in a report from TechCrunch, and though Microsoft didn't disclose the terms of the deal, TechCrunch puts the price at $100 million.

The Sunrise app pools calendar data from a variety of online sources, including Google Calendar, Apple iCloud, Microsoft Exchange, and Facebook. And it's available for a wide variety of devices, includes Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Android phones. The buy fits right into the aggressive new strategy Microsoft has pursued under CEO Satya Nadella. The software giant is now playing nicely with rival online services, while embracing devices that run something other than its own Windows operating system.

Last March, just a month after Nadella took the helm, the company unveiled Office for iPad. In November, it brought Dropbox file sharing to Office. And then, in December, it acquired mobile email startup Acompli, which became the foundation for the Outlook for Android and iOS apps the company launched last month.
