Pros

  • Best battery case performance we've tested so far.
  • Good protective qualities.
  • Premium look and feel.
  • Headphone extender included.

Cons

  • More expensive than the competition.

How much capacity a battery case boasts isn't always an accurate indicator of how well it performs. For example, the Incipio offGrid Express Backup Battery Case 3,000mAh for iPhone 6 lasted longer in our tests than the higher capacity 3,200mAh Tylt Energi Sliding Power Case for iPhone 6—but only by eight minutes. The 3,300mAh Mophie Juice Pack Plus (for iPhone 6) ($119.95) offers the most battery life by 17 minutes—which, along with its high build quality and protective qualities, are good enough reasons to give it our Editors' Choice award. The Boostcase for iPhone 6 also continues to enjoy our Editors' Choice recognition due its good battery performance, and most notably, its versatility.

Design and Features
At 6.13 by 2.93 by 0.66 inches (HWD), Mophie's Juice Pack Plus is one of the wider battery cases we've tested so far, but by no means is it too wide. It's not quite as heavy as battery cases with 2-in-1 designs, like the Boostcase for iPhone 6 ($12.99 at Amazon) , but it's not the lightest, either. The Juice Pack Plus comes in a soft-touch, rubbery-matte black plastic, glossy white, and metallic gold. Our review unit's black soft-touch color option looks and feels premium. The glossy white review unit of the Juice Pack Air (for iPhone 6 Plus) we also received doesn't look or feel cheap, but it's not as nice as the black unit's soft-touch coating.

You Can Trust Our Reviews
Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. Read our editorial mission & see how we test.

You slide your iPhone 6 into the Juice Pack Plus' larger main section till it connects to the case's Lightning connector, and you just slide the smaller section on top to secure the phone. It's tighter than the Incipio offGrid Express's frame design, which will easily come off and scatter upon impact on a hard surface.

Mophie has its own impact-protection rating system, and the Juice Pack Plus is rated as 3 out of 4. This means the case contains rubber bumpers inlaid into the case's inner edges, as well as four slightly raised bumpers along the inner surface of the case that keep your iPhone somewhat suspended inside. We dropped the case/iPhone combo from a height of about five feet, and both case and phone remained intact.

The main section of the case contains the usual micro USB port on the bottom edge used for charging your iPhone 6 and case, and it also acts as a pass-through for syncing with the included micro USB cable. There's also a port hole for the included headphone adapter.

Performance and Conclusion
The Juice Pack Plus's 3,300mAh battery gave our depleted iPhone 6 4 hours, 53 minutes of LTE video streaming time till the iOS 8 20-percent battery alert appeared, which is an excellent result. As with all our battery case tests, brightness was set to maximum, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth were turned off. Incipio's 3,000mAh offGrid Express ($19.99 at Amazon)  is the only battery case to come close to that result at 4 hours, 35 minutes. The closest battery case in terms of charge capacity is the Tylt Energi ( at Amazon) , which gave a result of 4 hours, 28 minutes in the same test.

If you read our OtterBox Resurgence Power Case for iPhone 6 ($99.95 at OtterBox) review, but were turned off by its relatively lacking battery performance, the Juice Pack Plus is for you. It offers excellent battery performance as well as good shock protection, even if it's not rated by an officially recognized standard. That said, the OtterBox Resurgence still provided 3 hours, 43 minutes of LTE video streaming time, which will easily see you through three episodes of your favorite show. So, you could save yourself $20 if you're not so concerned about the extra power the Juice Pack Plus will give you.

If you often carry around a backpack, you may want to consider an external battery, like the uNu Superpak , which could charge your phone, as well as a tablet several times over. But if you want a more portable option, check out the Boostcase for iPhone 6 and the Tylt Energi Sliding Power Case for iPhone 6.

About Antonio Villas-Boas

Junior Analyst, Consumer Electronics

Before becoming PCMag’s Junior Consumer Electronics Analyst, Antonio graduated from Colgate University with a BA in History where he, upon writing his nine millionth essay, never thought he would ever write ever again, especially for a living. After working in PR and sales, Antonio realized his knowledge and passion for technology far exceeded normal levels, and, ironically, writing about it was one of his few outlets. He decided to take a risk and go on his own. He started his blog, TonyVsTech.com, and was freelancing tech related articles for major tech outlets, namely producing how-to tutorial videos for TheUnlockr.com. After making his own way to CES in 2014, he heard PCMag’s call for a new Junior Consumer Electronics Analyst, and answered it with gusto. He still can’t believe his job is to review cool tech and gadgets at an awesome tech publication.
