Pros

  • Premium look and feel.
  • Good protective qualities.
  • Headphone extender included.

Cons

  • Smaller battery capacity than competitors.
  • Increases size and weight of the already-large iPhone 6 Plus.

If you were hoping the bigger battery in the iPhone 6 Plus would last longer than the one in the iPhone 6, you may be disappointed. Our battery tests revealed that the bigger iPhone's battery doesn't make much of a difference in terms of battery life. And the Apple phablet's beautiful 5.5-inch display makes it even more tempting to use for just about everything, especially streaming video content. If you think your iPhone 6 Plus could use more juice, the 2,600mAh Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 6 Plus ($99.95) is one of the most attractive battery cases available, and adds a good amount of protection to your precious device. It's a top pick, though our Editors' Choice goes to the Tylt Energi Sliding Power Case for iPhone 6 Plus for its bigger battery and versatile design.

Design and Features
If you're an iPhone 6 Plus owner, chances are you've accepted—and embraced—the device's large form. So the Juice Pack's 6.85-by-3.27-by-0.57-inch (HWD) dimensions and 3.9-ounce weight shouldn't be too big of a concern. That said, I prefer the sliding design of the Tylt Energi case, which lets you pop the battery portion off when you don't need it, allowing your device to keep a slim profile. At least the Juice Pack is a very attractive case. You get three color options, including matte black, glossy white, and matte gold. The Juice Pack's plastic body is better constructed than the 4,700mAh i-Blason iPhone 6 Plus UnityPower Rechargeable External Battery Case , which feels somewhat chintzy and less premium to hold.

Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 6 Plus back

The Juice Pack has a two-piece design, where your iPhone 6 Plus slides into the main section of the case, and the top section slides over the phone to secure it. This design prevents the case from breaking apart if you drop your device. The Juice Pack is a good choice if you're looking for protection, as the outer bands of the case add strength to the edges of your phone, and rubberized support pads along the inside back help protect it against high-impact drops and falls

The bottom edge of the Juice Pack is home to a micro USB port for charging the case and your phone (giving priority to the phone) with the included cable. The case also allows for pass-through syncing. There's a recessed port hole for the iPhone's 3.5mm headphone jack, which only fits connectors as narrow as the one found on Apple's Ear Pods. Thankfully, Mophie includes a headphone adapter for headphones with wider connectors.

Towards the bottom, on the back of the case, a series of four LEDs indicate battery charge status when you press the button to their left. Unlike most battery cases, which use one button for both the LEDs and power, the Juice Pack has a separate Power switch to the right of the lights.

Performance and Conclusions
In our battery rundown test, the 2,600mAh Juice Pack added 2 hours, 39 minutes of LTE video streaming time to our depleted iPhone 6 Plus until iOS's 20-percent battery alert popped up. As with all of our battery tests, screen brightness was set to max, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth were turned off. That's an expected result when compared with the 4,700mAh UnityPower, which lasted for 3 hours, 54 minutes in the same test, or the 3,500mAh Energi, which was good for 3 hours, 26 minutes.

Overall, the Mophie Juice Pack offers a nice balance of performance, build quality, and protection. But the Energi offers better battery life, and its sliding design allows you to ditch the battery section's weight completely if you don't need it. If the larger iPhone's size already stretches your pocket's limit, and you often carry around a bag, you may want to check out some external batteries. They let you use any case of your choosing for your iPhone 6 Plus, while providing much more power for the price. The uNu Superpak , for example, packs a 10,000mAh battery than can charge your iPhone 6 Plus several times over, and it costs the same as the Juice Pack. Just remember to pack a charging cable.

About Antonio Villas-Boas

Junior Analyst, Consumer Electronics

Before becoming PCMag’s Junior Consumer Electronics Analyst, Antonio graduated from Colgate University with a BA in History where he, upon writing his nine millionth essay, never thought he would ever write ever again, especially for a living. After working in PR and sales, Antonio realized his knowledge and passion for technology far exceeded normal levels, and, ironically, writing about it was one of his few outlets. He decided to take a risk and go on his own. He started his blog, TonyVsTech.com, and was freelancing tech related articles for major tech outlets, namely producing how-to tutorial videos for TheUnlockr.com. After making his own way to CES in 2014, he heard PCMag’s call for a new Junior Consumer Electronics Analyst, and answered it with gusto. He still can’t believe his job is to review cool tech and gadgets at an awesome tech publication.
