MPs will be handed new iPads after the general election, at a cost of £1 million to the taxpayer.

The House of Commons Commission says that offering each of the 650 members an iPad Air 2, costing £499 each, will save money.

The parliamentary administrative body recommended in 2013 that a tablet computer and a laptop “should be the first pieces of equipment offered to all members after the 2015 election”.

The Commons IT service assessed a range of tablets priced between £100 and £600, and concluded in January that the iPad Air 2 with mobile data technology was the best choice.
