Microsoft has cleared up any misunderstandings about its stance on Windows 10 upgrades for those running a pirated copy of Windows.

The computing giant has confirmed that anyone with an illegitimate operating system will be required to pay for an update to the latest version.

However, Microsoft is planning to run some "very attractive Windows 10 upgrade offers" to convince pirates to move to an official edition of Windows.

There was some confusion regarding the company's position on the matter as Windows chief Terry Myerson was previously quoted as saying that pirates would receive a free update.

The free upgrade offer applies to users on Windows 7 and all versions of Windows 8, as well as mobile users on Windows Phone 8 or higher.

It was recently confirmed that those who install Windows 10 will receive a free copy of Candy Crush Saga, whether they want it or not.
