Microsoft bypassing carriers to update Windows 10 phones

Microsoft is giving phone buyers an added incentive to consider one running its Windows 10 operating system: timely updates.

The company said it may bypass carriers and sent software patches directly to the Windows 10 phones, ZDNet's Ed Bott reported.

"A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to me that (a statement in a blog post by Microsoft's Terry Myerson) applies to all Windows 10 Mobile devices, personal and business, and that the new mobile update process will be consistent with the update process for Windows 10 on PCs. Updates will contain security and reliability fixes as well as new features," Bott said.

He said Myerson's blog post had referred to a "continuous update process" (that) "applies to all Windows 10 devices, including phones."

This means a phone running Windows 10 Mobile will get all updates, and it is up to Microsoft when to roll them out.

A simultaneous delivery of updates to "all devices on all carriers" will in turn mean "much less opportunity for fragmentation," he added.

But Bott said carriers may still be part of the Windows Insider program and could get early access to updates with new features.

"(T)heir input will help Microsoft decide when an update is ready to go out to all devices," he said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
