Ultimate General: Gettysburg has been reinstated to the App Store after being pulled because Apple took issue with its use of the Confederate flag.

The depiction of the Confederate flag is considered racist in certain contexts, and Apple has been clamping down on apps that display it since the Charleston, South Carolina shooting, in which a white man fired at an African American church.

Apple said that it was pulling apps that use the flag in an "offensive or mean-spirited ways" but not those that depict it in "educational or historical" contexts.

After consulting with Ultimate General: Gettysburg developer Game-Labs, Apple came to the realisation that the game belonged to the latter category.

"After several late night phone calls with Apple yesterday and today the game has returned to App Store the way it was... in 1863," said the studio in a statement.

After the mobile version was pulled, Steam decided to promote the PC edition of Ultimate General: Gettysburg on its main page, where it has attracted widespread acclaim from players.
