'iPhone 6S' Video Leak Confirms Major Internal Changes

This article is more than 8 years old.

There are several leaks and rumors floating around about the specifications built into the upcoming “iPhone 6S," including a stronger chassis, Force Touch, an A9 chip and an improved camera. And now MacRumors has received a recent leaked video and photos of the “iPhone 6S” logic board and display assembly combined with several other components.

You may notice the leaked “iPhone 6S” boots to a screen that has a gear icon, indicating that this is not the final commercial version of the "iPhone 6S." To reveal the internal components, the “iPhone 6S” is opened up by MacRumors' source in the video. Unsurprisingly, the outside of the “iPhone 6S” does not appear to have many changes compared to the iPhone 6. Here is the video:

The photo of the “iPhone 6S” logic board sent to MacRumors below reveals some of the networking components. A previous leak suggested that the logic board has a Qualcomm MDM9635M LTE baseband modem that offers faster data connections. And this photo shows that the “iPhone 6S” also has a Qualcomm WTR3925 radio frequency transceiver chip to support better network performance.

The logic board is the component at the top of the image. The bottom left of the image shows the RF transceiver zoomed in. The Qualcomm WTR3925 radio transceiver chip has a red box around it. In the bottom right, the Qualcomm WTR1625L RF transceiver has a blue box and the Qualcomm WFR1620 receive-only companion chip has a yellow box around it.

The WTR3925 is the first commercial 28nm RF transceiver and is the fourth generation of multimode LTE transceivers by Qualcomm. This chip is more power efficient than the 65nm process used for the WTR1625L in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Since both chips appear to be built into the logic board of the “iPhone 6S,” we can expect the network performance to be much stronger in the new Apple device.

A9 Chip

In the video, MacRumors’ source pointed out that the A9 chip powers the “iPhone 6S.” However, the chip does not have the Apple logo and “A9” stamped on it in the video.

Force Touch

Unfortunately, evidence about the rumor that the “iPhone 6S” has the Force Touch feature is not revealed in the leaked photos or video. Force Touch would enable the device to determine how hard the user is pressing on the display for performing certain functions. However, MacRumors pointed out that the shielding on the rear of the display uses glue instead of screws -- which is a major change from previous designs of the iPhone. 9to5Mac also posted a leaked photo that shows how a small rectangle is cut out from the thin metal plate that separates the screen from other internal components earlier this month. Both of those changes indicate that the Force Touch rumor is credible.

Apple is expected to announce the new “iPhone 6S” and “iPhone 6S Plus” next month. A revamped Apple TV streaming device with a new remote, Siri assistance and an App Store may also be unveiled at the same event.
