IBM's Supercomputer Watson Is Coming To San Francisco

Announced Thursday, IBM (IBM) will open an office for its Watson supercomputer in San Francisco next year. It will be located in the city’s SOMA neighborhood, which has become a well-known technology hub over the recent years.

Because of the strong pull of Silicon Valley, San Francisco is a popular city for tech firms; more and more companies are setting up their headquarters or additional offices in the city, with big tech names like Uber, Airbnb, Fitbit, and Dropbox all based there.

IBM has hopes that this office will shed light on the company and all of its other technology along with Watson, and make it stand out to start-ups, entrepreneurs, and venture capital firms. It also hopes that its data analytics business will benefit from the San Francisco location.

Watson is known for its incredible data crunching technology, as well as using artificial intelligence to answer questions in set languages instead of programming them. It lets users analyze huge quantities of data, providing answers based on evidence and discovering patterns that are potentially invisible to the human eye. In 2011, it famously won the game show Jeopardy!.

Many different types of companies, both start-ups and established, utilize Watson and its technology, and the Watson Developer Cloud computing platform is used by over 77,000 developers around the globe, according to IBM.
