Any concerns that the proposed merger of Dell and EMC would lead to job losses in Ireland have been mitigated to a significant degree by Dell’s plans to hire additional sales staff here.

The Irish Independent quotes Dell’s President for Europe, Aengus Hegarty, speaking at Dell World in Austin Texas, saying the Irish situation is positive, that the company is adding 15% more capacity to its sales force here.

"We're hiring 500 additional sales people both in Dublin and out in the field," he said.

"These are investments for the medium to long term."

He also said that Dell’s financial services division – a kind of internal bank- based in Dublin would now include Poland and South Africa within its remit.

Dell already employs 2,500 people here principally in Dublin, Cork and Limerick, while EMC – a major data storage company – and its offshoot , VM Ware employ an additional 3,500 people, principally in the Cork region.
