Fixing a Surface Pro 4 Is No Easy Task

iFixit gave the device's repairability a score of 2 out of 10 after a recent teardown.

If you're a do-it-yourselfer who has hopes of tearing down your Surface Pro 4 to fix things, think again.

The teardown experts at iFixit gave the new Surface Pro 4 a 2 out of 10 for repairability, with 10 being easiest to fix.

Indeed, iFixit revealed that while it's simple to get the solid-state drive out and replaced, the display assembly is fused, making it extremely difficult to remove. Adhesive is also present throughout the Surface Pro 4, making it hard to pull out components.

The team also spotted grease, an unusual component. "The Pro 4's exposed kickstand hinges are lubricated to meet your transforming computational needs," iFixit said. "Just try not to get any lint, or pet hair, or sand in there."

The Pro 4 fares better than the Surface Pro 3, which scored a dismal 1 from iFixit, but not by much.

The Windows 10-based Surface Pro 4 comes with a 12.3-inch display and runs on Intel processors. Depending on the configuration, customers can get up to 1TB of storage and 16GB of RAM, though that will cost you $3,199.

Repairability matters little to the average person. However, for DIYers who want to tinker or quickly fix something, it's an issue. Looks like Surface Pro 4 users will want to invest in a sturdy case to avoid the need for repairs.
