Streaming your own media on Apple TV just got a little easier with the arrival of Plex on Cupertino's new set-top box.

Plex, a PCMag Editors' Choice due to its user-friendly setup and interface, lets you stream media from a home network to compatible devices. It's only been available on Apple TV via some rather complex workarounds, but with the arrival of the tvOS App Store, Plex is an official Apple TV ($148.38 at Amazon) app.

In a blog post, Plex CTO Elan Feingold said Plex has wanted to be on Apple TV since day one, but Apple was slow to warm up to certain third-party apps. "Every single WWDC the rumors heated up, we got excited (along with half the Internet), and then our hopes ended up dashed on some fairly sharp rocks. With no rum," Feingold quipped.

But then came Apple's September event and news of the Siri-enhanced Apple TV with universal search and a new app store. Plex developers raced to build an app.

"We're incredibly proud of this new app, which is essentially one of the richest apps we've built feature-wise, built in just five short weeks," Feingold said. "It's completely free for everyone, and it's awesome."

As reported by 9to5Mac, the No. 1 spot on the Apple TV Top Paid charts is Simple X, one of those Plex third-party clients, which will likely change with the arrival of the official Plex app. Otherwise, the Apple TV charts are dominated by games.
