Report: Apple Testing Mobile Support App

A new app from Cupertino might save you a trip to the Apple Store.

Your iPhone is on the fritz. But can it be fixed with a few simple taps, or does it require a Genius Bar appointment? A new app from Cupertino might save you a trip to the Apple Store.

As detailed by uSwitch, the unnamed app will ask customers questions about their broken gadget, like whether you're running the latest version of iOS, to determine what might be going on. From there, it offers support options, letting the user schedule an in-store visit, send their device in for service, or simply call Apple.

The blog posted photos from well-known leaker Sonny Dickson, who first discussed the app last month. "Apple is making an app that will speed up fixing and servicing your devices. It asks you basic questions to quickly determine the problem," he tweeted on Oct. 22.

According to uSwitch, screen shots also tip an in-app chat option.

This move appears to be an effort by Cupertino to relieve strain on in-store Genius Bar workers, not to mention customers who may have to travel far and wide to reach their nearest Apple Store.

The leaked app also looks a lot like a mobile version of Apple's online support site, where iDevice owners can learn more about setup, usage, applications, backup, and repair, based on frequently asked questions, as well as support articles and the community at large.

"It's still unclear if it will be a completely separate application or if it will be added into the current Apple Store app," Dickson said.

Apple declined to comment on the reports.
