Cortana made its way to Windows 10 devices earlier this year. Now, it seems Microsoft is planning to experiment with something new for its digital assistant. Word has it the next major update will enable Cortana to float around Windows 10.

The upcoming update codenamed Redstone will make Cortana more powerful than ever, according to a report in The Verge. It will allow Microsoft’s digital assistant to appear on top of all documents and voice contextual suggestions and information. The report also mentions Microsoft might introduce an on-tap Cortana concept similar to that of Google’s Now on Tap on Windows 10 Mobile.

This will help Cortana give users quick access to useful and contextual information. The assistant will also handle additional search queries and provide assistance.

The update might even see Cortana in Office 365. This integration could be very helpful for businesses. Cortana can help users understand what another person is working on and come up with useful information.

Cortana is now available on iOS, Android and Cyanogen OS powered devices. Microsoft’s move clearly indicates its emphasis on cross-platform services and apps.

Windows 10 users will now be able to share data across PCs, Android phones, and iPhones. The Windows version of Cortana will still be more powerful than its iOS and Android equivalents.

“The Cortana app is available today in the U.S. and China for iPhones on iOS8 and up and Android 4.1.2. And will be available in the U.S. on One Plus One powered by Cyanogen OS with the 12.1.1 over-the-air update later in Dec,” confirmed Microsoft confirmed in a blog post.
