EE is recalling more than a million portable "Power Bar" smartphone chargers it gave to customers for free after several of them were found to cause a fire risk.

The mobile network urged customers to stop using the devices immediately and return them to its stores, saying it was a "precautionary action" to keep people safe.

The portable cylinders contain a battery that allows owners to charge their smartphones on the go. EE, the UK's biggest mobile network that also runs the Orange and T-Mobile brands, has more than 30 million customers in the UK and has given Power Bars away for free after launching the giveaway in April.

Around 1.5 million are believed to be in circulation, although some of those are in EE stores. An EE spokesman said slightly more than one million were in the public's hands, and two of them had been found to overheat since a previous recall earlier this year.

In August, it said a specific batch of chargers could be faulty, and recalled the "E1-06" model. The fault appears to have spread to other chargers, however.

"We are aware of a very small number of further incidents where Power Bars have overheated in circumstances that could cause a fire safety risk," EE said. "If you have a Power Bar, you should stop using it straight away and hand it in to one of our stores."

In July, a student in Aberdeen was badly burned when her charger exploded in her bedroom while she was sleeping.

EE said it would give customers returning their Power Bars a £20 voucher. It said the devices should not be charged at the mains or used to charge phones in the meantime.

A spokesman said: "We’re recalling all EE Power Bars. Customers with a Power Bar should stop using it and return it to one of our stores.

"We are taking this action because we are aware of a very small number of further incidents where Power Bars have overheated and this could cause a fire safety risk.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but customer safety is a priority and that’s why we’re taking this voluntary and precautionary action."
