Where does Apple Watch rank in your list of tech upgrade priorities? Plus where Apple is likely to go next

After early adopters rushed out to buy Apple’s iPad, they were getting on a third upgrade track, after Macintosh and iPhone, Evan Niu writes for The Motley Fool.

Niu writes, “I think it’s safe to say that if the average consumer were to list their upgrade priorities right now, it would likely look something like this:”

1. Smartphone
2. Computer/laptop
3. Tablet

“For consumers to upgrade their tablets, they need a good reason to (in terms of new features or better performance) and it has to fit within discretionary income budgets. Discretionary income is limited, so there is an inherent trade-off with upgrading a tablet since that money could be put toward a higher-priority smartphone upgrade, for example,” Niu writes. “It seems that for whatever reason, most people that have bought tablets aren’t upgrading them yet or all that often.”

“So what happens when you introduce a fourth category to the mix? Where does a smartwatch fit in terms of upgrade priority?” Niu writes. “I believe that the Apple Watch will likely come in at the very bottom of the list.”

MacDailyNews Take: Hence the reason why al you have to do is look at what people spend money on to get a sense of where Apple might go next.

The top six things on which Americans spend the most money:

1. Housing
2. Transportation
3. Food
4. Personal Insurance and Pension
5. Health
6. Entertainment

While we don’t know if we’ll ever see the Apple Grocery Store (would you like an Apple apple?), but how about an Apple Car, anyone?

Apple House? Apple Condo? Apple Communities? HomeKit-capable, of course. Apple Real Estate? Apple Insurance? Apple Bank? Apple Financial Planning?

Of course, Apple is already deeply working on #6 with the iTunes Store, Apple Music, Apple TV, iBooks Store, etc. and has begun work on #5 with the Apple Health app, HealthKit, and ResearchKit.

  1. Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes made of ticky tacky…

For all those who need labels to define their perpective.

The dumb get dumber all the time till they become tje 99%, which is where Apple has a new problem to solve…

    1. Yep, I got the Charge HR model for my wife for Christmas, but I doubt if it will motivate her to be more active. Several guys at work have them and seem to like them, although I’d have to take the info, such as steps taken, with a grain of salt.

    1. Ever wonder why Apple hasn’t released sales figures for the Apple Watch like they do everything else? Because no one would be impressed.

I hope they succeed just to further the ecosystem but damn if I can talk myself into wanting one. At all. And I’m known as the Apple Fanatic with my family and friends. They all thought I’d be standing in line to get one. Nope. It does nothing for me. I seriously doubt I would wear it if someone gave me one.

      1. Nothing I have read or heard has convinced me that Apple Watch would be anything other than a source of perpetual interruption and annoyance with a infernally small screen and ridiculous interface. I don’t need to waste my money to confirm the obvious.

  2. 1- ipadpro.. (Of Course when my pen arrives first.. I have ordered it 3 weeks ago)
2- Apple watch… Love the thing!
    3- iphone 7 .. Have a 6s now

What i want next is a much much much better TVos and intigration of the remote.

And where i want apple to go next ….Massive VR and AR …..
…and dare i say… In the lines of the New macbook style… But hybrid adaptable os device……full powered laptop… Swivel and fold tablet, detachable screen tablet …pencil intigration .

  3. Got the 6 Plus last year, got the 13″ rMBP earlier this year when it came out and the iPad Pro a little over a month ago. Happy as a clam right now. I normally skip the first generation products so I didn’t pay too much attention to the Apple Watch but I’ll look at the next iteration very closely and see if it fits in although I’m generally not a watch wearing guy. I do wear a watch when I travel and I’ll be traveling more than ever next year so I just may make the jump next year.

When you think about it, it’s IT and consumer electronics (both devices and services like wireless plans, home ISP, etc.) that we spend the most on after the mortgage or rent and transportation (auto and gas). So it’s natural for Apple to get into these areas in one way or another. Long-term, I also envision Apple getting into the field of energy, i.e. clean green energy for the home, the car and businesses besides for the devices. The likes of Exxon, Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron will have a new force to deal with.
