Google Eyes Extension-Free Chrome Tab Casting

Casting a Chrome tab to your TV via Chromecast currently requires an extension. That might change soon.

Google is working on a new feature that lets users send Chrome tabs to a Chromecast-equipped TV without a browser extension.

The high-tech dongle can stream apps, games, and videos to your big screen, but if you want your Chrome browser window to show up, you need to first install the Chromecast extension.

The Chromium team understands this is not ideal: According to Google evangelist François Beaufort, the team is "experimenting" with tab casting that does not require an extension. Those who use the Chrome beta channel can test it out now.

"By simply enabling the experimental flag 'Media Router' at chrome://flags/#media-router, the Google Cast extension will be disabled and you'll be able to right click on a page and see a new 'Cast...' menu," Beaufort said. "Toggling off the flag will re-enable the Google Cast extension."

There is no word on when the function will make its way to the stable build of Chrome. Google did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

Fewer browser extensions are always welcome, but that's not to say there aren't Chrome add-ons worthy of your attention: Check out our roundup of The Best Free Google Chrome Extensions.
