Chipmaker with major local presence will power 360-degree videos and more for the international news agency.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. will power virtual reality reporting for the Associated Press, enabling the news agency to produce more 360-degree videos and other interactive content.

The company said it will provide the hardware to run AP's virtual reality content on both high-end virtual reality headsets such as the Oculus Rift produced by Oculus VR Inc. as well as cheaper phone-based models. Chipmaker AMD (NYSE: AMD) is based in California but CEO Lisa Su lives in Austin and the company employs about 1,600 people locally.

Virtual reality and augmented reality are attracting major industry and consumer attention, including a $793.5 million funding round for Florida-based Magic Leap Inc., which has an Austin office. Market adviser Digi-Capital estimates that both markets will hit $150 billion by 2020.

Another Austin virtual reality company in the mix is Binocular, which was acquired last year by a New York company.
