AMD Powers The Sulon Q Headset: Virtual And Alternate Reality Without Wires

Following
This article is more than 8 years old.

AMD and Sulon have unveiled the Sulon Q headset, a device that that looks to disrupt the virtual and augmented reality spaces before they've even materialized in earnest. How disruptive? It's a headset that serves up AR and VR, complete with Windows 10, spatial recognition, and a "console-level" graphics processing chip.

Oh, and it's wireless.

I'll have eyes on later this evening, at which time I'll be able to convey much more about the Sulon Q. For now we're operating with the limited knowledge supplied in a teaser video and recent announcement to press.

The device is being created in partnership with startup Sulon Technologies, and we know it runs on Windows 10, with components like a 256 SSD, 8GB of RAM, a 1440p OLED display, 110-degree field of view, and uses an AMD FX-8800P processor combined with Radeon R7 graphics.

In its announcement, Sulon says:

The Sulon Q headset is truly an amazing piece of kit. We are working incredibly hard to make exploring virtual worlds as simple and intuitive as exploring the real one, and the Sulon Q headset is a big step towards that.

As a powerful and lightweight all-in-one solution that combines VR and AR capabilities with real-time spatial mapping, the Sulon Q headset offers an experience that’s unlike anything else. As we put the finishing touches on it and ready for launch in late spring, we hope everyone enjoys today’s sneak peek and is equally excited about the headset as we are.

Obviously this news leaves us with many more questions than answers, but I expect more details to emerge out of GDC this week, beginning tonight at AMD's press conference.

I love living in the future.
