Computers at risk? Microsoft advises public against scam calls

Monday, 9 May 2016, 10:00 Last update: about 9 years ago

Over the past days, there has been a spate in phone calls to private people from unidentified individuals claiming to be calling on behalf of Microsoft.

In these phone calls, these individuals who are NOT from Microsoft, are tellingpeoplethat their computers are vulnerable and at risk of virus and offer to send them an email with a link which will then give them access to the persons computer. They then recommend that they purchase anti-virussoftware to fix the problem and ask for their Credit Card details.

Microsoft understands the concern being expressed by many people who are calling Microsoft’s offices in Malta to ask about these phone calls.

Microsoft Malta would like to advise the general public that as a company, MICROSOFT never contacts people privately via telephone or via email and it’s not in its policy to advise or sell products via telephone.

As such, those individuals who receive such phone calls are encouraged to ignore such fraudulent calls. Reporting such incidents to the local authorities is also adviseable especially if sensitive data would have already been given out. In case credit card details have been given out, it would be adviseable that one’s Bank is contacted straight away.
