HPE launches Internet of Things platform

Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) recently launched its IoT (Internet of Things) platform. The platform is expected to manage a wide array of connected devices. HPE wants to focus on the main elements of IoT solutions, including connectivity, “compute” (data collection, analysis and storage), and security.

The IoT space attracting tech heavyweights

According to Cisco, the number of connected devices is expected to increase from 25 billion in 2015 to 50 billion in 2020. As shown in the above chart, the global IoT market is expected to reach $7 trillion by 2020, growing at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 21%. The IoT segment has attracted a number of tech heavyweights, including semiconductor giants Intel (INTC) and Qualcomm (QCOM). The launch of an IoT platform by HPE will enable the company to streamline its server and networking hardware segments.

In May 2016, Microsoft (MSFT) announced the acquisition of Solair. Solair, based in Italy (EWI), is an IoT (Internet of Things) company that specializes in connecting workplace devices. In 1Q16, Cisco (CSCO) completed the acquisition of Jasper Technologies, an industry leader in providing cloud-based IoT (Internet of Things) service platforms. Jasper has helped a number of companies to introduce their products to the market. It has also helped these companies to manage and monetize these products as services on a global scale.
