Samsung's Surprising Numbers Set Up Aggressive Galaxy Launch

This article is more than 7 years old.

Samsung has more good news it can use to promote the upcoming Galaxy Note 7. The optimism is presented in Samsung's earnings guidance for Q2. Assuming that the guidance holds true when the consolidated figures arrive at the end of the month, the South Korean company will deliver its best quarterly performance for the last two years.

Guidance for the quarter shows a predicted revenue of 50 trillion won ($43 billion), with an operating profit of 8.1 trillion won ($7 billion). Quarter on quarter that shows a 4 percent increase in revenue, but 21 percent increase in profit. Year on year shows a similar level, with revenue up 3 percent and profit up 17 percent.

What we don't see in the guidance is the breakdown by division. We don't know if DJ Koh's gamble to go for an earlier release of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge in Q1 has maintained sales momentum into Q2. We don't know if Samsung's semiconductor business has seen a slowdown as Apple takes the manufacturing of the A10 System on Chip for the iPhone 7 to TSMC. Nor do we know if the display business has picked up the slack as OLED screens become the default choice for more smartphones every day.

What is clear is that Samsung has a good story to tell about its business, it will be able to promote itself as a successful company, and that sort of presentation in the media contributes to a higher level of goodwill towards the South Korean manufacturer. This is all coming to pass as one of Samsung's key handsets gets ready to go on sale.

Assuming the rumors on the launch schedule are correct, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will debut on August 2nd, around the same time as the consolidated figures arrive. A brand new handset, packed with innovation. A visionary company that is delivering more than 'a big smartphone'. And a sense of optimism and financial prowess that is rare in today's smartphone market.

That's a triple tag of good news that the Galaxy Note 7 can build on. With Apple's iPhone 7 struggling to escape the shadow of the 2017 iPhone (a fine example of the Osborne Effect), Samsung has built another impressive platform of good news and positive perceptions ahead of the release of a key handset.
