An appeal court in New York has ruled that the US government cannot force Microsoft to give authorities access to the company's servers located in other countries.
As part of a drugs investigation, the US authorities had sought access to to emails stored in a Microsoft server here in Dublin.
But the IT giant argued a US search warrant should not apply in foreign countries.
The judges agreed but said that outdated communication laws needed to be looked at urgently.
