Google Maps for iOS Gets Multi-Stop Directions

Summer vacationers, rejoice: Google has launched multi-stop directions for Maps on iOS.

Released recently on Android, the function now allows iDevice users to enter numerous targets for just one trip. Need to pop into a supermarket on the way to your beach house? Looking for scenic spots along your road trip route? Tap in as many destinations as you want by clicking the corner menu and "Add stop."

Long-press on a location to drag and rearrange the order. Then hit "Done" and enter navigation mode for the same driving experience you're used to, with a few more planned breaks along the way.

The new feature—also accessible on the Web—is available for biking, walking, and driving directions. Transit users are still stuck plotting complicated routes one stop at a time.

Last month, Google rolled out a mobile Maps update that boasts a cleaner look, "areas of interest," and a new color scheme aimed at helping folks navigate the world with fewer distractions. The search giant also improved the typography of street names, points of interest, and transit stations, making them more distinguishable from other items on the map. Once you've updated the mobile app, look for orange-shaded "areas of interest"—regions highlighted for their abundance of activities. Zoom in for details about each venue; tap once for supplementary information.

Another long-rumored but perhaps less welcome change to Google Maps is advertising: The company in May announced it is "experimenting with a variety of ad formats … that make it easier for users to find businesses as they navigate the world around them." Like dropping promoted pins along a route for waypoints like gas stations and coffee shops.
