A bunch of old shit that used to belong to Steve Jobs is going up for auction later this month.
The auction is being held by Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles, as part of a bigger collection of belongings from “Hollywood’s most private stars.” Steve Jobs was certainly private. We’re sure he would be thrilled that some of his old stuff is now up for sale to the highest bidder.
The items come courtesy of the caretakers of the Jackling House—that mansion in Woodside, California that Jobs lived in during the mid-1980s.
Most of Jobs’ effects up for auction are pretty middling, bordering on creepy. But there are some gems to be found. Below, a handful of the items being auctioned, ranked from best (bid!) to weirdest (maybe don’t).
1. NeXT Turtleneck
Apparently, NeXT—the company Jobs founded after leaving Apple—had its own branded clothing. Naturally, that included a turtleneck. The starting bid for this amazing artifact of commerce is $500. It’s expected to sell for between $1,000 and $3,000.
2. Steve’s Old Bathrobe
What would you pay to have access to Steve Jobs’ old Christian Dior bathrobe? If you said “several hundred dollars,” you could be in luck. This gem—which includes two electric razors!—has a starting bid of just $200. Just imagine, Steve Jobs could have been naked in this thing.
3. An Old Seiko Watch
See, Steve Jobs would have totally loved the Apple Watch. There are actually two watches up for auction, but I like this Seiko model better because it has that whole normcore Jobsian aesthetic thing going on. This watch should not be confused with the Seiko watch that sold at a different auction back in February for $42,500. The starting bid is $500 and the watch is expected to sell for up to $2,000.
4. Sony Portable CD Player
This CD player is great for lots of reasons. One, it’s by Sony (a company we know Jobs was obsessed with). Two, it was apparently the “primary sound system in the kitchen area where Jobs spent most of his time in the house.” I like to imagine that Steve Jobs used this CD player to listen to The Beatles and Bob Dylan, dreaming about how he would create his own portable music player that was much more beautiful. Starting bid is just $100.
5. Steve’s Old Leather Jacket
Remember that famous photo of Steve Jobs giving IBM the finger? Well, the leather jacket that Steve wore in that photo (and presumably other times) is up for auction. Bids start at $4,000 and it’s expected to sell for up to $12,000.
6. This Shitty Marketing Book
I highly doubt Steve Jobs ever even opened this book, a first edition copy of Regis McKenna’s The Regis Touch: Million-Dollar Advice from America’s Top Marketing Consultant. Still, I love that the book was inscribed, “Steve, your [sic] a special friend. I’ve learned a lot from you. Regis.” The starting bid on this item is $50.
7. A Dead Man’s Wallet and ID Card
This one kind of creeps me out. It’s an old wallet that used to belong to Steve Jobs, along with some business cards and his NeXT ID card. There’s just something unsettling and unseemly to me about a dead person’s wallet. If you’re not skeeved out, the starting bid is $500.
The auction will take place on Sept. 23 at 10am PST, if you want to bid for any of this stuff yourself. But you’ll have to fight Gizmodo for that bathrobe.
