Here’s What To Expect From Apple’s iPhone 7 Reveal This Week
The major design differences come in the form of redesigned plastic antenna lines (to make them less unsightly) and the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack. That latter point has sparked a lot of controversy among the iPhone faithful with people forming into two opposing camps. On one side, you have users that lament the loss of the headphone jack and the thought of using an easily lost adapter to connect their “legacy” headphones and peripherals.
On the other side, you have users that embrace change and say that Lightning is the way to go for next generation headphones. These same people also point to the existing Bluetooth wireless standard that iPhone users could take advantage of, ditching wires altogether.
Whatever the case, recent leaks suggest that a 3.5mm to Lighting adapter might be included in the box. This is typically not the case for Apple, which is historically stingy when it comes to in-box add-ons – especially adapters. There’s also talk that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus could include wireless “AirPods” headphones in the box. One of these two solutions is possible, although likely not both.
If you were looking for Apple to do something dramatic with screen resolutions this time around, you’ll likely have to wait until the iPhone 7s or perhaps even the iPhone 8. Current reports suggest that Apple will retain the same 1334x750 and 1920x1080 resolutions for the upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus respectively. While it would have been nice to have seen a bump to 1080p for the iPhone 7 and QHD for the iPhone 7 Plus, Apple apparently isn’t ready to make that transition yet. On the other hand, both displays are expected to adopt wide color True Tone display technology that was introduced with the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.
One of the most talked about features of the iPhone 7 Plus (other than the loss of the headphone jack), is its dual cameras. One camera sensor will capture images in color, while the other will capture in black and white. The data from the two sensors is combined to produce a single photograph with superior image quality and low-light performance. As for the iPhone 7’s single rear camera, it’s expected to finally gain optical image stabilization.
We are almost certainly guaranteed to see a new Apple A10 processor and M10 co-processor running the show. The rumor mill is suggesting that the iPhone 7 will retain 2GB of RAM, while the iPhone 7 Plus will up the ante with 3GB. Apple is also widely reported to drop the often maligned 16GB entry-level SKUs and double base storage to 32GB. The two [upgrade] storage tiers will also double to 128GB and 256GB respectively.
Other features reportedly lined up for the new iPhone 7 family include IPX7 water resistance (as seen on the Apple Watch), a pressure sensitive home button (instead of a physical switch), and five color options (gold, rose gold, silver, space grey, and piano black).
While all of this leaked info seems highly plausible at this point, we’ll have to wait until Wednesday to truly see what Apple has been working on for the past year.
