Apple's new iOS 10 update causes major 'bricking' problems for iPhone and iPad users

Apple's "biggest iOS release ever" got off to a rough start on Tuesday night withย social media filled with complaints from users attempting to install the upgrade.

The company launched itsย iOS 10 and macOS Sierra to the public at 6pm UK time and it didn't take long for people to run into difficulty.

Many iPhone and iPad users reported error messages ย and complained of "bricking" โ€“ย a term used to describe devices rendered unusable due to a software or hardware fault.

Bricking: What is it and how do I fix it?

Many users who downloading the software update over wi-fi found their phones becoming completely useless.

After installing the software, instead of their iPhone or iPadย automatically turning back on with iOS 10 installed, a screen appeared prompting users to plug their handsets into a computer, rendering the phone unusable.

Apple Support has been reminding users to back up their phones before attempting to upgrade, and recommending they downloadย the software over iTunes. However it has now been fixed, with phones now updating to iOS 10.0.1 โ€“ย a minor update that resolves the issue.

"We experienced a brief issue with the software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability," Apple said in a statement. "The problem was quickly resolved and we apologise to those customers."

Users who have found their phone bricked must connect it to a computer, open iTunes and then put their device in recovery mode by holding down the home and power buttons. A pop up should appear on iTunes asking you to update or restore. Select "update" to do a new install of iOS 10.

It is not the first time Apple has had teething problems in rolling out major updates.

When users tried to update to iOS 5 in 2011, high demand appeared to be behind users getting multiple error messages when trying to update.ย In February this year, Apple faced criticism after an update started bricking devices if they had been repaired by a third party.

How to upgradeย to iOS 10

The new software iOS 10 is available to download via iTunes or over the air,ย and will ship with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus from September 16.ย

To upgrade go to Settings -> General -> Software Update on your iPhone or iPad.

Apple recommends users back up their devices before installing the update. You can do this with iCloud or by connecting it to a computer.

What to expect

iOS 10 โ€“ย the software for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch โ€“ย features a revamped lock screen, including the removal of "Swipe to unlock", customisable widgets, and apps which work insideย iMessage.

One of the most exciting additions to iOS is that Apple will finallyย let users delete default apps โ€“ย see you later Stocks!

With the new software, your screen will not display a "Swipe to unlock" feature. Instead, users will have to press the home button.

Another key feature of iOS 10 that has long been available on Android is customisable widgets โ€“ย extra information from an app โ€“ย that can be used to check things such as calendar appointments and weather information when swiping left from the lock screen.

New gestures

As well as the change to the "swipe to unlock" feature, there are also a host of other ways to navigate the system with a swipe of the screen.

Swiping up from the bottom edge still gets you the Control Center with quick access to the flashlight, airplane mode and other frequent functions. But it's now split into multiple screens. Once Control Centre is open, swipe to the left to get audio and video controls. Swipe left once more to control lights and other accessories through Apple's HomeKit automation system.

From the lock screen, you used to be able to access the camera by pulling up from the bottom right corner. Now, you swipe left from the right edge.

Swiping down from the top edge still gets you recent notifications, but your widgets and calendars have moved. Now, you get those by swiping right from the left edge. Those widgets join app and news recommendations that were already there.

Getting sticky with it

While there was a lot of people decidedly miffed about Apple replacing the gun emoji with a water pistol, there's still a lot of excitement about the new stickers you can get for iMessage - especially Star Wars ones.

Never lose your car again

Apple will now keep track of where you park so you don't have to. Apple maps will detect when you park you car and automatically drop a pin.

That way you'll always find your car, now matter how much of a rush you were in when you parked it.

You just have to use Apple maps...

New on iOS 10- a guilt function for night owls

Do you get less sleep than you should? Do you find yourself staying up late, say, playing with you iPhone? Nostalgic for the nightly command from your childhood to "turn that light off and go to bed"?

Well Apple has a new feature for you. New to the clock app, it's called Bedtime. You simply tell it what time you want to get to bed on a given night of the week, and your phone will buzz when the clock strikes that hour to remind you that you set an overly-optimistic goal and will probably be tired  all day tomorrow. Er, rather, to get you on a consistent sleeping pattern that will leave you rested, productive and thankful you downloaded iOS 10.

Accentuate the positive

Despite the problems being experienced by some users, many others have been impressed by iOS 10:

...with the ability to delete default apps appearing to be the post popular feature so far:

Back up your device before installing iOS 10

That's what Apple advises - and plenty of people seem to be regretting having not done so

Apple Support has started reminding people to do so before they get started:

More users report problems with iOS 10 update

Twitter is filling up with iPad and iPhone users reporting that the Apple upgrade is putting their phones into recovery mode - meaning they have to wipe their phone's memory.

The Apple Support Twitter account has been encouraging customers to update via iTunes rather than over the air:

Apple has issued a statement saying: "We experienced a brief issue with the software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability. The problem was quickly resolved and we apologize to those customers. Anyone who was affected should connect to iTunes to complete the update or contact AppleCare for help."

Who knew?

So, farewell then Stocks

As predicted above, getting rid of the much-maligned Stocks app seems to be many people's first course of action after receiving the update:

Several users are reporting that updating is causing problems with their device

It's a busy day for Apple's Support staff.

The Apple Support Twitter account is directing users to this pageIf you canโ€˜t update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

In these situations, you might need to use recovery mode to restore your device:

  • iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
  • You see the Apple logo on your screen for several minutes with no progress bar.
  • You see the Connect to iTunes screen.

Learn what to do if you see the progress bar on your screen for several minutes.

More new things you can expect

Apple Music, Maps, Photos and Health Kit are all getting a makeover in iOS 10.

Music has had a complete rework from the bottom-up and Photos has a new section called โ€œMemoriesโ€ that can automatically stitch together a video of a time and place, such as holidays or weddings.

Expect more viral videos along the lines of this one from Facebook Memories: Facebook makes oddly cheerful video from manโ€™s horrific car crash photos

How to delete default apps in iOS 10

For years iPhone and iPad users have been stuck with a number of default apps on their devices.

With iOS 10, those days are over. Should you want to, you'll now be able to get rid of (deep breath): Calculator, Calendar, Compass, Contacts, FaceTime, Find My Friends, Home, iBooks, iCloud Drive, iTunes Store, Mail, Maps, Music, News, Notes, Podcasts, Reminders, Stocks, Tips, Videos, Voice Memos, Watch, and Weather.

To do it, it's the same process as with any third party app: hold your finger on it until the icon starts to jiggle, then tap the x that appears.

Apple cautions: โ€œWhen you remove a built-in app from your Home screen, you also remove any related user data and configuration files. This can affect things like related system functions or information on your Apple Watch.

"The apps built into iOS are designed to be very space efficient, so all of them together use less than 150MB."

Siri-ous business

Apple is giving Siri a boost in iOS 10. The upgraded voice assistant is now open to third party developers, meaning youโ€™ll be able to ask Siri to book you an Uber or order you some Domino's. It can also transcribe voicemail messages.

However, it still might cause the odd frustration...

New emojis on iOS 10

As we reported in June, the iOS update will bring with it more than a hundred new and redesigned emoji characters.

Apple says: "This exciting update brings more gender options to existing characters, including new female athletes and professionals, adds beautiful redesigns of popular emoji, a new rainbow flag and more family options."

One mildly controversial change is the replacement of the the pistol emoji with a water pistol. Reflecting concerns about gun violence in the US and across the world, Apple has opted to replace the revolver with a bright green and orange water pistol.

Not everyone is happy with the change...

...And off we go

Congratulations to Alex Morgan for being the first (but not the last) to post this screenshot on Twitter:

Some people are getting  their celebrations in early:

Is your device compatible for the new update?

Apple upgrades have come under scrutiny in recent years as old iPhones and other devices cannot run the new software without crashing or dying.

When iOS 9 was introduced, it contained a feature that disabled iPhone 6 and 6 plus handsets that were repaired by non-Apple technicians.

Cynics might say the updates are just a way to get you to buy a new handset,  but Apple won't let you get iOS 10 on anything earlier than an iPhone 5

iMessage is app-solutely fabulous

iMessage has had a makeover with lots of fun additions on iOS 10. Apple will sell stickers, apps and games exclusively for the message app.

There are multiple sticker packs available, with both free options and paid.

The app has been opened to third party developers too, meaning that there will soon be apps in the messaging service that can be used to order food, shop, book tickets and send people money within a chat.

Apple has also added fun features such as emoji tap, animated backgrounds, videos and disappearing messages to entice people away from the likes of Facebookโ€™s Messenger and WhatsApp.

Cometh the hour, cometh the iOS 10

In half an hour Apple will launch iOS 10, heralded by the company as its "biggest iOS ever."

iOS 10 is the latest version of Apple's software for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, and it can be downloaded from 18.00 UK time. This rolls around every year, but the new update brings in-message apps - you can order pizza with your mates - and lets you delete default apps that you never use.

Here's our guide on how to download iOS 10 and a run through of the best features.

We will keep you posted on everything else.
