While smartphone cameras have long offered zooming, these are typically done with software tricks, so image quality suffers. iPhone 7 Plus (starting at $869, various wireless carriers)

Unlike the iPhone 7, Apple’s latest phablet is in short supply after last week’s launch. If you order now, you may get one by Thanksgiving.

The good: Just like its smaller sibling, the 7 Plus is a superfast, top-tier smartphone running iOS 10. But thanks to dual cameras — the biggest difference between the 7 and 7 Plus — the capability for wide-angle and telephoto photography is unmatched by the competition.

The bad: Get ready for wireless headphones … but you’ll have to buy them yourself. At this price point, you’d expect wireless charging and a pair of Apple’s upcoming AirPods to be included. For me, this phone is too large. The 6.2-inch-by-3-inch size doesn’t lend itself to one-handed use, so make sure you try one out before you buy.

The bottom line: Wait for 2017, if you can. The 7 Plus is an investment, and you’d be wiser to spend that money on a truly game-changing phablet that may be released next year.
