"Just a word to the wise, or a cautionary note, for anyone who (like me) believed that Time Machine was a reliable, mature OS X application, and a dependable way to recover lost material (and not lose unlost material). Last weekend, I inadvertently deleted fifty or a hundred files from my documents folder (out of more than 28,000 present). Rather than search around in the crowded Trash and attempt to restore them one by one to the dozens of different folders they had been accidentally removed from, I got the bright idea of simply 'entering Time Machine' (as per the top right finder menu command) and restoring my whole documents folder (all 28,000 files, more than 6 gigs of documents -- almost all MS Word files with a few Acrobat files mixed in -- ten or fifteen years of writing in all) all at once (how brilliant can one person get) to the state it was in a few hours before I made the mistake. I'd get back the couple hundred of trashed files and folders, along with everything else that I hadn't deleted and lost and was still in my documents folder when I did it. One easy step. One fell swoop." MacInTouch 11:21 AM
