Closing Apps On Your iPhone Doesn't Save Battery

Closing Apps On Your iPhone Doesn't Save Battery

It's the opposite, in fact.

It seems like every single day we're told that one of our long-held beliefs is wrong, or the way we've been doing something our whole lives isn't correct.

The latest thing we've all been doing wrong, like fucking idiots, is closing the apps on our iPhones to try and save battery. Yeah, apparently we shouldn't be doing this. It doesn't save battery and can, in fact, drain it quicker.

Technology expert John Gruber has written a long post about why force-closing your open apps actually uses up more battery.

In it he wrote: "Not only does force quitting your apps not help, it actually hurts. Your battery life will be worse and it will take much longer to switch apps if you force quit apps in the background."

The reason for this, John writes, is that the clever people who make iPhones have designed the Apple iOS to be power efficient.

So, when you switch between apps, without closing it, your phone will sort of 'freeze' it and, while in this suspended state, it will use hardly any power at all until you reopen it.

Whereas, if you close the app, you're making the phone completely shut it down and then when you do come to open it again, it will use even more power to open it from the start.

This is seconded by an official Apple document, which tells users when they should force close apps: "When you double-click the Home button, your recently used apps appear.

"The apps aren't open, but they're in standby mode to help you navigate and multitask. You should force an app to close only when it's unresponsive."

And as an extra bonus, your apps will load faster, good news if you're so addicted to checking Instagram that waiting 0.2 of a second makes you want to lash your phone at a wall in rage.
