The original Galactic Alliance wasn't exactly the most revolutionary tower defense game. It was a pretty solid one, though, and its four-player co-op feature was a novel twist not usually seen in the genre. Galactic Alliance 2 is basically a much prettier version of that same solid foundation.

Galactic Alliance 2 takes the more open-ended, Fieldrunners-style approach to tower defense. Players can lay down their towers wherever they choose on the grid and it's up to them to build a path as snaking and fortified as possible. The five maps are all equal in size but there is some variation among them. Sometimes asteroids are there that block tower placement and harder stages have multiple enemy entrances and exits to account for.

The real draw however is the multiplayer where, after scanning their thumb, four players have access to their own tower menus on the four sides of the iPad. Coordinating strategies with friends is a great, fun way to play and the game smartly adds more enemies once more players are added regardless of the difficulty setting. Even playing by using all four menus by oneself in an enjoyable, new spin on the formula.

Beyond that, however, there aren't many more notable features. The polygonal towers themselves look and sound better than anything seen in the first game mostly due to the neon lighting and impactful attack noises. However, they don't have the most unique art style and the game in general would've benefited from a wider variety of towers. When playing campaign mode the player won't initially hear any music but as they inch their way towards victory the soundtrack begins to swell. It's an awesome touch that makes the final triumph feel so much sweeter.

Galactic Alliance 2 doesn't do much to set itself apart from the rest of the genre. What it does do differently though, multiplayer, it does quite well. That alone makes it worth a look.
