This MMO-flavored free to play dueling game has its moments, though players will need to stay net-connected.

The only subject more debated in the gaming industry, outside of micro-transactions, is that of being forced to connect to the internet just to play a game. Until recently, this trend has only gone as far as consoles and home PCs. However, the likes of Devil War seem ready to usher in a whole new era and bring the experience to mobile platforms as well.

Devil War is completely unplayable if players are not connected to a network, be it Wi-Fi or 3G. The gaming experience wants to create a universe exclusive to players, but equally embed other players from around the world, making them available to duel at any time.

Devil War has very similar habits to its MMO forefathers. Players choose a character class (from Warriors and Mages to Paladins and Shamans) and can build XP through quest chains in order to gain levels. From here, players can develop key qualities about their character such as additional stamina, armour resistance, attack power and more.

Unfortunately, Devil War's quest system is inherently dull. It's a simple case of player's selecting a quest, actually purchasing the loot at the start of the quest chain instead of collecting at the end, and tapping the screen a few times so that it builds up to completion. While the rewards of gaining a level pop up, a sense of accomplishment is seriously lacking here.

Even the duel system leaves a lot to be desired. Players will find themselves randomly attacking people from all over the world who are the same level as them, and based on stamina, strength and health stats, a randomly generated combat system determines whether the players win or lose. The battle cannot be influenced by the player and is left all up to chance.

Of course, with players performing all these actions, their character's stamina deterioates, and so players must take their character to the inn. Here, players can use the free stamina cubes or they can purchase more. Free cubes only last a limited time, so unless players are willing to splash the cash, they will have lengthy breaks in-between their games.

Once into the game, however, Devil War can win players over with its addictive, pick up and play, Massively Multiplayer Mobile Online RPG experience. It embodies many of the traits that have made the genre so popular. Add to that Devil's War is free-to-play and can be played extensively without any charge to the player.

It's just a shame the developers haven't given players much of a hook and instead chosen to show the behind-the-scenes mechanics that power the genre, rather than forcing them to sift through a series of pre-deterrmined events
