Zombie games have run amuck in the App Store these days. It seems to me that the genre has become increasing popular over the last few years. Zombie Gunner is a one of the latest additions to the genre that has a lot of fun gameplay and of course, lots of zombie killing.

Zombie Gunner follows the story of a man named Andrew who is apparently left in a post-apocalyptical world crawling with zombies and very few human survivors. One of the survivors is his daughter, Lisa, and Andrew will stop at nothing until he has found her amidst the chaos. The game is a side-scrolling shooter that gives it a nice retro feel. As I mentioned, there are some human survivors and this works to Andrew’s advantage as he is able to team up with some of them to fight the zombies. Additional character reinforcements, weapons and vehicles can all be purchased in the game’s store for coins that are collected for killing zombies. The game is broken up into different stages, each with its own objectives. Players must complete the objectives without dying, and without letting any human survivors die in some cases, in order to advance. The gameplay can get a little repetitive but I think this trait is pretty typical of a lot of the side-scrolling games out there.

No zombie game would be complete without a great deal of zombie slashing and Zombie Gunner does not disappoint. Andrew not only just kills the zombies, he makes them completely explode into a mess of blood and gore. The controls let players direct Andrew from side to side and allow him to aim in different directions using the right on-screen joystick. I especially like this aspect of the control layout since it gives players the ability to kill zombies attacking from any direction, including aerial attacks.

My only complaint with Zombie Gunner is that its graphics seem a bit fuzzy. The game doesn’t look like it is quite optimized for Retina Display devices. This may be by design to give the game a more retro feel, but I felt that sharper graphics would enhance the quality of the gameplay.

With such a saturated zombie game market, I think Gamevil leaps over some of its competitors with Zombie Gunner. The game is free but does offer in-app purchase options for more gold to be able to upgrade weapons and other items faster. Zombie Gunner is a well-made game that will get players ready for both Halloween and the inevitable zombie apocalypse.
