BBC fixes 'buggy' iPlayer Radio app

The BBC has been forced to revise its buggy iPlayer Radio app for iPhone just weeks after its release.

The new BBC Radio iPlayer app for iOS

The BBC released the app on October 8, promising that listeners would be able to "wake up to your favourite BBC station" and "listen on the move".

However, some users have experienced technical issues, and today the BBC released an update in a bid to fix an audio playback problem that meant the radio player would stop without warning and fail to resume playback.

In Apple's App Store, iPlayer Radio has an average rating of four out of five stars; however, several reviews of the old version (v1.0.1) from dissatisfied customers criticise audio dropout issues that have dogged its performance.

Lee Wilson states in his review: "Love the Beeb, especially after their Olympics coverage. This app for me though is too unstable, lots of buffering issues."

Honest Jonny said: "Really nice design but instead of buffering just kept stopping. Got a bit annoying."

Juls1066 said: "Very sleek design and features but all pointless when it loses connection all the time. I have full wi-fi signal and decent broaband but still drops out every 3 or 4 mins at which point you have to unlock phone and start again. Shame as everything else is great.

Sparkiemike said: "It may look great but not much good for listening to the radio. It keeps losing the audio and does not recover without user intervention. I have a really good internet connection. All the extra content is great but not much good if you can't do the basics like listen to the radio. I have gone back to radioBOX! :("

A spokesperson for the BBC said: "The BBC regularly releases updates to its apps to ensure audiences receive the best possible experience. Today, we updated our BBC iPlayer Radio app addressing an issue where some listeners had experienced audio dropout. This has now been fixed, along with some performance improvements which make the app even better to use."
