LaCie CloudBox: 'family cloud' storage

By

There's growing interest in networked storage that is easily accessible from outside the home or office. LaCie's entry into this market is the CloudBox.

Aimed at the home market, the LaCie CloudBox is more attractively styled than many similar devices.

Installation is about as easy as it gets: according to company officials, you just plug it into the mains and a router, and that's it.

CloudBox shows up on Windows and OS X systems along with other connected devices, and it includes UPnP for sharing content with devices such as Xbox 360 and smart TVs.

A simple system of folders provides access control: shared files go into the Family folder; private files go into users' Private folders.

Remote access to files is available via the Wuala app for computers and mobile devices, or by sending secure download links to recipients.

CloudBox can also be used to back up computers through Time Machine (OS X) or the LaCie Backup Assistant.

CloudBox is available in 1TB ($179), 2TB ($239) and 3TB ($299) configurations.
