Dell to start shipping SAP Hana appliances to customers
Dell is to start shipping SAP Hana analytics appliances to enterprise customers.
The company will build Hana appliances using Dell PowerEdge R910 servers and various Dell storage and networking products. The move, announced on Thursday at Dell Tech Camp in Amsterdam, was made possible after SAP certified the Dell products to run Hana.
The Hana platform combines an in-memory database with an analytics engine. It's in-memory storage, column store and parallel processing architecture is suited to rapid analysis of large datasets from multiple sources and making predictions in real or near-real time.
Dell's Hana appliances are available as single server and larger, scale-out systems. Appliances use Dell fibre channel SAN technology and scale-out systems are available with 1TB, 2TB or 4TB of memory.
Hana customers will also be able to access support from Dell Services, which will help organisations assess, build, deploy and run Hana appliances.
Dell's scale-out systems configured for SAP HANA are currently available in EMEA and the US.
Early customers of Hana include Unilever, which is using the platform to more accurately reflect the cost of raw materials in the price of its packaged goods.
Dell also announced Dell Active System Manager 7.0, Dell's datacentre management software that introduces the ability to manage both physical and virtualised infrastructures.
Features include provisioning and deprovisioning of mixed infrastructures, reduced time to provision new workloads, the ability to create and modify resource pools across multiple systems and workload resource scheduling.
Active System Manager 7.0 will be available with Active System 800 and its associated reference architecture in the US in February and in Europe by late spring.
Dell said the release builds on expertise gained through its recent acquisition of Gale Technologies.
Last year Dell created a new Enterprise Systems and Solutions unit in an attempt to further its ambitions in the enterprise services space.
